Scindapsus 'Peasun' is a highly sought-after and beautiful aroid, known for its stunning marbled variegation of silver and green. Its care is similar to other Scindapsus species, but with a few key considerations to maintain its unique foliage.
Here's a detailed care guide for your Scindapsus 'Peasun':
1. Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. This is crucial for maintaining the plant's vibrant variegation.
Too little light can cause the plant to lose its beautiful silver markings and revert to a solid green.
Direct sunlight, especially in the hot afternoon, will scorch the leaves.
An east-facing window or a few feet away from a south or west-facing window is usually a great spot.
2. Watering:
Allow the soil to get about half dry before watering again.
Scindapsus plants are sensitive to overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
A good indicator that the plant is thirsty is when its leaves start to slightly curl. This is a sign to water, but don't let it get to the point of severe wilting.
Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot, and then empty any excess water from the saucer.
3. Humidity and Temperature:
Scindapsus 'Peasun' thrives in medium to high humidity levels (50-70% or more).
While it can tolerate average household humidity, providing more will help it grow faster and produce larger, healthier leaves.
You can increase humidity with a humidifier, a pebble tray, or by grouping it with other plants.
The ideal temperature range is between 65°F and 85°F (18∘C to 29∘C).
4. Soil:
Use a well-draining, chunky potting mix that allows for good air circulation around the roots.
A mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or a quality houseplant potting mix is a good choice. This will prevent the soil from becoming compacted and waterlogged.
5. Fertilizer:
During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half the recommended strength once a month.
Over-fertilizing can lead to leaf burn, so it's better to under-fertilize than over-fertilize.
Do not fertilize during the fall and winter when the plant's growth naturally slows down.
6. Growth Habit and Maintenance:
Scindapsus 'Peasun' is a climbing or trailing plant.
You can let it trail from a hanging basket or encourage it to climb a moss pole or trellis. Providing a support to climb can result in larger leaves.
As a relatively slow-growing plant, be patient with its progress.
Toxicity: Like other members of the Araceae family, Scindapsus contains calcium oxalate crystals and is considered toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Keep it out of reach of children and animals.
