Bromeliads are a family of tropical plants known for their striking foliage and colorful flower bracts. Many varieties grow in a rosette shape with leaves forming a central “cup” that can hold water. They come in many forms, from compact indoor plants to larger landscape specimens. Popular genera include Guzmania, Vriesea, Neoregelia, and Aechmea.
They are native mainly to Central and South America and are prized as decorative houseplants because of their unusual shapes and long-lasting blooms.
Hot + humid + bright shade = perfect bromeliad climate.
Plant Care
Light
• Bright, indirect sunlight is ideal.
• Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves.
• Some varieties tolerate lower light indoors.
Water
• Keep the central cup lightly filled with fresh water (for cup-forming types).
• Refresh the water weekly to prevent stagnation.
• Keep potting mix slightly moist but never soggy.
• Reduce watering in cooler months.
Humidity
• Prefer moderate to high humidity.
• Mist occasionally or place near other plants.
Soil
• Use a well-draining orchid mix or airy potting medium.
Temperature
• Best between 18–30°C.
• Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.
Feeding
• Use diluted balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during active growth.
After Flowering
• The main plant slowly declines after blooming but produces “pups” (baby plants) that can be separated and replanted.
