Notes
Light
Bright, Indirect Light
Essential for vibrant leaf color and flowering. An East- or North-facing window is ideal.
Avoid Direct Sun
Direct, intense sun will scorch the leaves and cause brown, crispy spots.
Watering
Consistently Moist
Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Allow the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil to just barely dry out between waterings.
Use Lukewarm Water
Cold water can shock the roots and cause unsightly spotting on the leaves.
Avoid Wetting Leaves
Do not splash water on the fuzzy leaves, as this can cause spots, rot, or fungal issues. Bottom watering or watering at the soil level is best.
Humidity
High (60%+ is ideal)
This is the most crucial factor. Low humidity will cause the leaf edges to turn brown and crispy.
Boost Humidity
Use a humidifier, grow it in a terrarium/bubble bowl, or place the pot on a pebble tray filled with water (making sure the bottom of the pot is above the waterline).
Temperature
Warm
Maintain average room temperatures between 65∘F to 80∘F (18∘C to 27∘C).
Avoid Cold Drafts
Keep it away from cold windows, A/C vents, or exterior doors, as it is highly sensitive to cold air (especially below 60∘F or 15∘C).
Soil
Light, Airy, Well-Draining
A mix designed for African Violets works well. You can also mix peat moss or coco coir with perlite or vermiculite for excellent drainage and aeration.
Fertilizer
During Growing Season
Feed every 2-4 weeks during the spring and summer (growing season) with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength, or use an African Violet food.
Winter
Reduce or stop feeding during the winter months.
Maintenance
Trailing Habit
Episcias are trailing plants that send out runners (stolons). They are excellent for hanging baskets.
Pruning
Pinch back leggy stems to encourage a fuller, bushier plant. You can also cut off the runners to encourage more blooms on the main plant.
Grooming
Remove any yellowing, damaged, or spent leaves and flowers.
