The Ficus Pumila Curly Variegated is a popular and easy-to-care-for plant. It's a vining plant with ruffled, variegated leaves that makes a great hanging plant, terrarium plant, or topiary.
Ficus Pumila Curly Variegated Care:
Light
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. The variegated leaves, with their white or cream-colored edges, need more light than the non-variegated variety to maintain their vibrant color. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light can cause the plant to become "leggy" (stems growing long with few leaves) and lose its variegation.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch. It's best to water the plant thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain out of the pot. Reduce watering in the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows down. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is a common issue for this plant.
Humidity & Temperature
As a tropical plant, the Ficus Pumila 'Curly Variegated' loves high humidity. Aim for humidity levels of 60% or higher. If your home is dry, you can increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or using a humidifier. The ideal temperature range is 65-80°F (18-26°C). Avoid placing the plant in drafty areas or near sudden temperature changes, as this can cause the leaves to drop.
Soil & Fertilizer
Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. A good mix can be a standard commercial potting mix with added perlite, sand, or coco coir to improve drainage. This plant is not a heavy feeder. During the growing season (spring and summer), you can fertilize it with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer, diluted to half-strength, every 2-4 weeks. Reduce or stop fertilizing in the fall and winter.
Pruning & Propagation
Pruning is a great way to keep your plant looking full and bushy. You can pinch back or snip the vines as needed to control their length and encourage new growth from the base of the plant. You can easily propagate new plants from the cuttings you take. Simply place 4-6 inch stem cuttings in water or moist soil. Once roots are established, you can plant them in their own pots.
