Hoya Densiflora (Indoor Plant) is a common flowering plant known for its small, flat, waxy, star-shaped flowers that secrete sweet, edible, reddish-brown nectar with a gardenia-like smell. The leaves are ovate, dark green, up to 6 cm long and 4 cm wide.
These plants typically bloom during spring or summer, usually once a year, with flowering expected from October to April in warmer months. Each floral display can last at least a week. There are around 500 accepted Hoya species found in various Asian countries like the Philippines, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Polynesia, and New Guinea.
Hoya Densiflora is a popular houseplant and ornamental flower, grown well in pots and hanging baskets. It can also be started in water from cuttings, with roots appearing in about 4 weeks. However, roots grown in water may rot over several months or a year.
People primarily buy this plant for its attractive smell and color. To encourage blooming, use high phosphate fertilizer two months before its normal blooming time. Hoya Densiflora has been traditionally used to cure skin diseases and alleviate rheumatism pain. It is a tropical plant that thrives in humid conditions, is easy to grow, and doesn't require much attention. It prefers diffused light, as direct sun can cause leaves to fade and yellow.
Watering should be done about once a week in summer and every two weeks in winter; overwatering will damage the plant. It doesn't have strict watering requirements, so infrequent watering is acceptable. In spring, Hoyas respond well to feeding, producing vigorous growth. Fertilize monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid food.
Common propagation methods include leaf cutting, stem cutting, layering, and growing from seed. However, seed viability can be short, making leaf and stem cutting the easiest and most cost-efficient methods.
Fungal infection is a common problem, which can be treated with diluted vinegar on a soft cloth. To prevent this, avoid using tap water, which may contain additives. Brown spots on leaf tips indicate overwatering, underwatering, or sunscald.
In India, Hoya Densiflora plants can be purchased online and delivered to many states.
