The Alocasia triangularis is a beautiful but somewhat demanding aroid, known for its distinctive arrow or shield-shaped leaves and textured appearance. As a member of the Alocasia genus, its care focuses on providing a warm, humid, and brightly lit environment.
Here is a comprehensive care guide for your Alocasia Triangularis(Small) :
1. Light
Bright, Indirect Light is Best: Alocasias thrive in bright, filtered light, similar to the dappled light they would receive under a rainforest canopy.
Avoid Direct Sun: Direct, strong sunlight can quickly scorch and fade the delicate leaves. Place it near an east-facing window, or several feet back from a south or west-facing window.
Tolerates Medium Light: It can survive in medium light, but growth will be slower, and new leaves may be smaller.
2. Water
Keep Soil Evenly Moist: This plant likes to be consistently moist, but not soaking wet or soggy. Think of it as a "wrung-out sponge."
Watering Schedule: Water when the top 25% to 50% (top 1-2 inches) of the soil feels dry to the touch.
Drainage is Crucial: Use a pot with excellent drainage. Alocasias are highly susceptible to root rot if the roots sit in standing water. Always empty the saucer after watering.
Reduce in Winter: If the plant enters a period of dormancy (common in winter), reduce watering significantly, allowing the soil to dry out more between waterings.
3. Humidity
High Humidity is Essential: Alocasias are tropical plants and prefer high humidity, ideally above 60%.
Signs of Low Humidity: Brown, crispy tips and edges on the leaves are often the first sign of insufficient humidity.
How to Increase Humidity:
Use a room humidifier nearby.
Group it with other plants to create a humid microclimate.
Place the pot on a pebble tray filled with water (ensure the pot is not sitting in the water).
Note: Misting is generally insufficient to raise humidity for long periods.
4. Temperature
Warmth is Key: Maintain a warm environment, ideally between 65°F to 80°F (18°C–27°C).
Avoid Cold: Do not let temperatures drop below 60°F (15°C).
No Drafts: Keep the plant away from cold drafts from windows or doors, as well as heating/AC vents. Sudden temperature changes will stress the plant and can cause leaf drop.
5. Soil
Airy, Well-Draining Mix: Alocasias require a loose, chunky, and well-draining soil mix that allows for good air circulation around the roots.
Recommended Mix: A specialty aroid mix or a blend of standard potting soil amended with plenty of perlite, orchid bark, or coco coir works well.
6. Fertilizer
Feed Regularly in Growing Season: During the spring and summer (active growing season), fertilize every 4–6 weeks with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Do Not Fertilize in Winter: Discontinue feeding during the fall and winter months when the plant's growth slows or stops.
7. Dormancy
Winter Dormancy: Alocasias may enter a period of dormancy in the fall or winter, especially in response to shorter days, lower light, or cool temperatures.
Signs: The leaves may yellow and die back completely.
Care During Dormancy: Do not panic! The plant is not dead. Reduce watering dramatically, but don't let the corm (bulbous base) dry out completely. Stop fertilizing. Keep it in a warm place. Resume normal care in the spring when you see new growth emerging.
8. Pruning
Only prune to remove old, yellowing, damaged, or dead leaves.
Alocasias will naturally drop an older leaf when producing a new one; this is normal and known as the "one leaf in, one leaf out" cycle, though a very healthy plant may maintain several leaves at once.
