The Begonia Violet Blonde is likely a hybrid prized for its striking foliage, and its care follows the general guidelines for begonias, particularly the Rhizomatous or Rex Begonia types which are typically grown for their leaves.
Here is a guide to help you care for your Begonia Violet Blonde :
1. Light
Bright, Indirect Light: This is crucial for maintaining the plant's vibrant coloring. Place it near an east or west-facing window, or a south-facing window that is filtered by a sheer curtain.
Avoid Direct Sun: Intense, direct sunlight, especially the hot afternoon sun, can easily scorch the leaves and cause them to fade.
2. Water
Water When Top Soil is Dry: Allow the top 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings.
Be Consistent, But Avoid Soggy Soil: Begonias like consistent moisture but are very prone to root rot if overwatered or left in soggy soil.
Water at the Base: Water the soil directly, avoiding the leaves to help prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew.
3. Humidity
High Humidity is Preferred: Being a tropical plant, it thrives in higher humidity, ideally 50% or more.
Increase Humidity: To boost humidity, you can use a pebble tray filled with water beneath the pot (make sure the pot is not sitting in the water), or place a humidifier nearby.
Avoid Misting: Misting the leaves is often ineffective and can promote fungal issues on the velvety foliage.
4. Soil and Potting
Well-Draining Mix: Use a lightweight, well-draining potting mix. A commercial houseplant mix amended with extra perlite or orchid bark for aeration works well.
Good Drainage: Ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes.
Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant is significantly root-bound, choosing a pot only about 1-2 inches larger in diameter.
5. Temperature
Warm and Consistent: Maintain a consistent warm temperature, ideally between 65°F and 75°F (18°C and 24°C).
Avoid Cold: Protect the plant from temperatures below 55°F (13°C) and keep it away from cold drafts or heat vents.
6. Fertilizing
During Growing Season: Feed every 2-4 weeks during the spring and summer (the active growing season) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength.
Reduce in Winter: Reduce or stop fertilizing entirely during the fall and winter months when growth slows down.
7. Pruning and Maintenance Begonia Violet Blonde
Tidy Up: Pinch back leggy stems to encourage a bushier shape and remove any dead, yellowing, or damaged leaves as needed.
Air Circulation: Good air circulation is important to prevent fungal problems, especially in humid conditions.
