Raven ZZ Plant Care Guide
1. Light Requirements
Aspect
Details
Tolerance
Low to Bright Indirect Light. The Raven ZZ plant is extremely versatile and can survive in very low light (including just fluorescent office lights).
Ideal
Medium to Bright, Indirect Light is best for optimal growth and to ensure the new growth (which emerges bright lime green) matures quickly to its signature deep black color.
Warning
Avoid Direct, Intense Sun, especially hot afternoon sun, as it can easily scorch the leaves and cause them to turn yellow or brown.
2. Watering
The most common mistake with a ZZ plant is overwatering. It is an extremely drought-tolerant plant because it stores water in its thick, potato-like underground rhizomes.
Aspect
Details
Rule of Thumb
Water Sparingly. Always wait for the soil to dry out completely before watering again.
Frequency
Typically every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring/summer). Reduce to every 4–6 weeks or longer in the dormant winter months.
Technique
Water thoroughly until liquid flows out the drainage hole. Immediately dump out any water that collects in the saucer. Never let the pot sit in standing water.
3. Soil & Potting
Aspect
Details
Soil Mix
Fast-Draining Mix is essential to prevent root rot. Use a standard indoor potting mix and amend it heavily with drainage material. A pre-made cactus or succulent mix works well.
Amendments
Add perlite, pumice, or coarse sand to your potting soil for extra drainage. A mix of 50% potting soil and 50% drainage material is often recommended.
Potting
Must use a pot with a drainage hole. ZZ plants prefer to be slightly root-bound, so only repot every 2–3 years or when the rhizomes are noticeably pressing against the pot.
4. Temperature & Humidity
Aspect
Details
Temperature
Thrives in average home temperatures, ideally between 65∘F and 75∘F (18∘C to 24∘C). Keep it away from cold drafts or vents.
Humidity
Tolerates average indoor humidity. No special requirements are needed.
5. Fertilizing
Aspect
Details
Schedule
Feed sparingly only during the active growing season (spring and summer). Once a month or once every few months is sufficient.
Type
Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength.
6. Common Problems (Troubleshooting)
Symptom
Cause
Solution
Yellowing Leaves
Overwatering (most likely) or, occasionally, low light.
Stop watering immediately. Check roots for mushiness (root rot). Repot in fresh, dry, well-draining soil if rot is present. Water less frequently.
Drooping/Wrinkled Stems
Underwatering. The plant is using its stored water.
Check the soil. If it is bone-dry and pulling away from the pot, give it a deep, thorough watering.
Lack of New Growth
Too little light or the plant is dormant (winter).
Move to a location with brighter, indirect light. Be patient; they are naturally slow growers.
Stems are Mushy/Soft
Severe Root Rot from chronic overwatering.
Cut away all mushy, black, or rotted parts of the rhizomes/stems. Repot in new, dry soil and do not water for several weeks.
