🌿 Ficus deltoidea ‘Gold’
-
Common name: Mistletoe fig / Mistletoe tree
-
Botanical name: Ficus deltoidea
-
‘Gold’ variety: Selected for its attractive yellow/golden-green foliage
-
Origin: Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and surrounding regions
-
Growth: Compact, bushy and relatively slow-growing compared with many other ficus.
-
Leaves: Thick, rounded/triangular leaves with a distinctive golden-green appearance.
-
Fruit: Small round figs can develop, often yellowish to orange/red as they mature.
☀️ Light
This one likes much brighter light than a Calathea.
For Kerala, I'd recommend:
Bright filtered sunlight → excellent
Morning sunlight → excellent
Strong afternoon direct sun → preferably avoid
If you keep it indoors, place it very close to a bright window. Too little light can make the plant lose its attractive golden colour and become leggy.
💧 Watering
It's more forgiving than Calathea.
Let the top 2–3 cm of soil dry before watering again. Then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
Don't keep the pot sitting in water.
🌱 Soil
A very well-draining mix works best:
40% cocopeat + 30% soil/compost + 30% perlite/pumice
A pot with good drainage holes is important.
🌡️ Kerala climate
Kerala is actually very suitable for Ficus deltoidea. 🌴
You can grow it outdoors under bright filtered light, on a balcony, veranda or covered terrace. During very heavy monsoon periods, make sure the pot isn't continuously saturated.
✂️ Pruning
You can prune the growing tips to make it bushy and compact. It's a good plant for shaping.
One thing to remember: like other Ficus, it produces milky latex when cut, which can irritate skin, so wash your hands after pruning.
