HELICONIA and GINGER Plant CARE
Spacing – If heliconia are planted together space them at least 4’ apart. Psittacorum should be planted 1’ apart for mass flowering effect. Gingers should have 5’ spacing. Soil preparation – Dig the soil 1’ in diameter for heliconia and ginger planting. Psittacorum can be smaller. Good black/ red soil mixed with dried manure and compost are good. Planting – The rhizomes should be planted not more than 6” deep. Do not heap soil at the base as leaves sprout from the rhizome. Watering – Water well after planting. Then only when the soil is drying out. Once the leaves have sprouted water well and ensure there is no stagnation around the base of the plant. Growth – Heliconia and gingers should start sprouting leaves within 2-3 weeks. Flowering- Flowering will start after around 8 months for heliconia and gingers. Psittacorum will flower earlier. Feeding – Use dried organic manure 4-5 times a year. NPK 19- 19-19 can be used once a year after the plant has attained a year in maturity. Maintenance – The flowering stalks should be cut at the base to promote new stalks and flowering.
