Note: the emersed and submerged forms of the plant are extremely different. Depending on the availability at the farm, we will dispatch any of the grown forms.
Limnophila aromatica is an aquatic flowering plant, a member of the Plantaginaceae family, native to Southeast Asia. It is primarily used as a soothing decorating plant in fish tanks to make the environment more enticing for tropical fish.
This plant, also known as paddy rice herb due to its ruggedness, can flourish in any moist or watery setting that is extremely hot. It is well known for its soft, tapered leaves that are green on the front and slightly purplish on the back. The coloration can vary widely depending on light exposure.
Propagation is most efficient through stem cuttings. To ensure quick and healthy growth, separate jumbled stems into individual plants, trim broken leaves, and space stems further apart. This method will lead to robust and stunning flowering plants.
Limnophila Aromatica Care:
The plant can be demanding in controlled environments like home aquariums. Keepers must provide maximum light. Regular supplements are highly advised, including CO2 (20-30 mg/L), iron, phosphate, nitrate, and other minerals. Inadequate lighting or mineral deficiency will hinder its growth. Constant phosphate levels are required to prevent algae.
Propagation:
Limnophila aromatica multiplies easily from branches that can be cut and replanted. Cuttings can be obtained throughout the summer. It is simpler for the plant to grow above water than below, so you don't need to bother putting sprouts into the substrate. Miniature branches with white blooms may appear, adding aesthetic appeal. Aggressive pruning encourages rapid growth and a bushy effect.
Planting:
Limnophila Aromatica is a delightful perennial with captivating colors ranging from green to red and purple-pink. Its leaves typically grow in pairs and are relatively thin and pointed. Trimming aggressively is not necessary; it will only encourage quick growth and the desired bush effect.
Growth Rate:
Limnophila aromatica has a fairly rapid growth rate, reaching up to 27 inches. It will quickly spread across your tank if cared for properly.
Tank:
The size of the tank is less important as Limnophila aromatica can grow easily in crowded conditions. However, propagation may be challenging in very small tanks. A medium-sized tank is suitable.
Lights:
While Limnophila aromatica can grow under dim light, it won't grow much or produce desired colors. Bright light is necessary for this species. External lighting is advised to ensure growth is unaffected, even in winter.
Substrate:
Regular aquarium soil and heavy clay sand are suggested. Adding stones can prevent the soil from appearing mushy. Clay sand provides necessary minerals, reducing the need for fertilizers.
Water Quality:
Hard, mineral-rich water is ideal. It also needs warm water with balanced phosphate and CO2 levels for its stunning colors to fully bloom.
Benefits of Limnophila Aromatica:
Aesthetics: Vibrant colors complement the tank, creating a tranquil ambiance.
Hiding Places: Bushy appearance with dense leaves provides ideal laying areas for fish.
Nutrition: High nutritional level due to hard water requirements; withered leaves provide food for scavenging fish.
Oxygen: Converts carbon dioxide to oxygen at a high rate, making the tank healthy for fish.
The plant's coloration depends on the environment. In a good environment, it will be most colorful. When crushed, its leaves release a subtle aroma; they are not poisonous.
