The Philodendron gloriosum ‘Tricolor’ is a rare, premium collector’s plant highly sought after for its large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves. Unlike most climbing philodendrons, this species is a terrestrial crawler that spreads horizontally across the ground via a thick stem called a rhizome.
Visual Appearance
- Leaf Texture: Deeply velvety and matte, which absorbs light and gives the foliage a rich, luxurious look.
- Veining: Crisp, striking white or pale pink veins that radiate from the center to the leaf edges.
- Variegation: A highly distinct, three-toned mosaic pattern consisting of dark forest green, pale mint green, and creamy white or soft yellow splashes.

Growth & Care Overview
- Growth Habit: Horizontal creeper. It requires wide, rectangular planter boxes rather than deep, round pots so the rhizome has room to crawl.
- Rhizome Placement: The creeping stem must rest on top of the soil substrate. Burying it completely under the dirt causes the plant to rot and die.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sun will burn the velvety leaves, while low light will cause the unique tricolor variegation to fade back to solid green.
- Soil & Moisture: Needs a highly porous, chunky aroid mix containing orchid bark, perlite, and charcoal. Water only when the top few centimeters of soil feel dry.
- Climate: Prefers warm tropical temperatures and high humidity levels above 60% to prevent the leaf edges from turning brown and crispy.
