The Staghorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) is a distinctive ornamental fern celebrated for its striking antler-shaped fronds, reminiscent of deer horns. This unique epiphyte naturally grows on wood or hanging mounts, making it an excellent choice for vertical garden displays or as a captivating hanging plant.
Known for its light green to grey-green foliage, a mature Staghorn Fern can reach up to 90 cm (3 feet) in width, creating a lush, verdant statement in any space. This live plant weighs approximately 0.4 kg, shipped ready for mounting or potting.
Instead of traditional soil, use materials like sphagnum moss, coco chips, bark pieces, or mount it on a wooden board.
Feed once a month with diluted liquid fertilizer or seaweed fertilizer. Some gardeners place banana peel or organic compost behind the shield leaves for slow-release nutrients.
Do not remove the brown shield leaves at the base as they protect the plant. Only remove dry outer fronds. Ensure good air circulation.
Thrives in bright indirect light. Avoid direct harsh sunlight which can scorch the fronds. Can tolerate partial shade.
